Since 2021, Colorful Kidz, a 501(c) (3) children’s nonprofit, has been creating room makeovers for children and teenagers in need. They receive referrals from school guidance counselors, therapists, and social workers. Founded with a mission to bring joy, creativity, and inspiration to children’s living spaces, Colorful Kidz is 
dedicated to transforming bedrooms and play areas for kids in need, fostering environments where they can thrive.
The children they help may be battling an illness, have a chronic diagnosis, have been through trauma or may be in financial distress. Once the referral is complete, they only interview the children to find a way to connect them with their space. They ask the children if there is one thing that they would like to have in their rooms. The answers are often surprisingly simple: a bed, a bookcase, a rug and most often a desk for them to do their homework.
The team at Colorful Kidz does an assessment of the space, and approximately six weeks later return to create the room makeover. Often the caregiver makes arrangements for the children to stay elsewhere or at least away for the day while the makeover is in progress. On the final day there is a room reveal for the children.
A Vision of Hope and Creativity
Colorful Kidz was established by founder Caren Berry, who recognized the profound impact that a personalized and vibrant living space can have on a child’s well-being and development. Understanding that many families in challenging 
circumstances lack the resources to create such environments, Berry set out to make a difference, one room at a time.
The organization collaborates with local social service agencies, schools, and community groups to identify children who would benefit from a room makeover. These children often come from backgrounds of economic hardship, illness, or other life challenges. By transforming their personal spaces, Colorful Kidz aims to provide them with a sense of normalcy, ownership, and pride.
The Makeover Process
Each project undertaken by Colorful Kidz begins with understanding the child’s interests, favorite colors, hobbies, and dreams. This personalized approach ensures that the final design resonates with the child’s personality and aspirations. Volunteers, including local artists, craftsmen, and community members, come together to paint murals, build furniture, and decorate the rooms, turning each space into a unique haven of creativity and comfort.
The makeover process is not just about aesthetics; it’s about creating a supportive environment where children feel valued and loved. The organization often involves the children in the design process, giving them a sense of control and input over their new spaces.
How YOU Can Get Involved
Colorful Kidz thrives on community involvement. Local businesses, volunteers, and donors play a crucial role in supporting the organization’s projects. Donations of supplies, furniture, and funds are always appreciated and essential to the success of each room makeover.
Currently Colorful Kidz is looking for 4 DIY Teams to compete in their annual fundraiser Cape Cod Flippz which is similar to the HGTV show Flea Market Flip.
If you are a DIYer, contractor, furniture refinisher, or a furniture painter who loves expressing your creativity and transforming furniture, this event is for you!
