Cape Cod Baseball League Guide
By: Stephen Kota
The Cape Cod Baseball League, or Cape League, is one of the top collegiate summer baseball leagues in the United States. Over the years, more than a thousand former players from the summer league have gone on to play in the major leagues, including these legendary players:
- Catcher Carlton Fisk, who played for the league during the 1966 season, played for the Boston Red Sox and the Chicago White Sox during his 24-year-long career.
- Catcher Jason Varitek, who played in the league for five summers in the ‘90s, won the World Series Championship with the Red Sox in 2004 and 2007.
- Infielder Nomar Garciaparra, who played for the league during the 1993 season, spent nine seasons with the Red Sox. He made history by being one of just a handful of Major League Baseball players to hit two grand slams in one game.
These three former players weren’t the only ones who went on to make a name for themselves. See all the members of the Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame.
The Cape League has its roots in the informal summer baseball games that began taking place on Cape Cod as early as 1860. After several decades, four teams – Falmouth, Osterville, Hyannis, and Chatham – founded the Cape League in 1923.
Today, the league has grown significantly; ten teams currently compete in the league, five from the East Division and five from the West Division.

How to catch a Cape League game
The Cape League’s regular season runs from mid-June to mid-August every year. During this season, each team plays a total of 44 games.
These games are open to the public, who can attend every game free of charge. During this time, the teams raise money through donations (which they may ask for at the entrance to the game) and raffles.
Want to attend the next Cape League game? In addition to the 220 regular-season games, the Cape League also hosts an all-star game during the regular season’s second half.
The all-star game pits All-stars East Division against All-stars West Divisions. A Cape Cod venue typically hosts the game, although Fenway Park has hosted some all-star games in recent years.
The top eight teams, four from each division, qualify for the playoffs at the end of the season. The playoffs determine the league champion by eliminating teams using three rounds of best-of-three series.
When the playoffs are over, the winning team takes home the Arnold Mycock trophy, which is named for one of the league’s most influential managers.
