Dust off your mitts and break out your caps; the Cape Cod baseball season officially begins on June 12th. After an abbreviated 2021 season, the Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL) is back in full swing in 2022 with doubleheaders, an all-star game, and an exciting playoff format to crown the champs!
What is the Cape Cod Baseball League (CCBL)?
The Cape Cod Baseball League is an amateur summer league that features some of the best collegiate talent in the nation. It offers college athletes the option to sharpen and hone their game during the summer months and vacationers and locals’ endless entertainment.

When Does the Cape Cod Baseball Season Start?
The regular Cape Cod Baseball season kicks off on June 12th and runs through August 2nd, with the playoffs beginning on August 4th. Some other key dates include:
- July 23rd – All-Star Game
- June 19th & June 26th – Double Header Days
The playoffs are three rounds of best 2 out of 3. Check the schedule for dates and times as the playoffs get closer.
Who Plays in the Cape Cod Baseball League?
The CCBL players are the “stars of tomorrow.” While the players are currently collegiate athletes, with 1 in every 6 CCBL players eventually making it to the MLB, you are sure to see some future stars.

Over the league’s 137-year history, over 1,250 players have played at least one game in the MLB, with almost 300 CCBL alum actively playing today.
What is the Significance of the Cape Cod Baseball League?
With such a lengthy history comes a storied past. The league was formed in 1885 and was originally filled with war vets and local and regional college players.
This all changed when the CCBL became an officially sanctioned league by the NCAA in 1963. The league picked up in popularity; however, the use of aluminum bats was still a deterrent to some.
In 1985, the league moved to the use of wooden bats. This helped it gain popularity with college players, coaches, and MLB scouts. To this day, it remains one of the premier amateur leagues in the nation.
Do I Have to Pay to See a Cape Cod Baseball League Game?
Attendance to CCBL games is free of charge! The league is a non-profit organization and relies on the generosity of volunteers and donors.

Where Can I Play Baseball on Cape Cod?
If you are looking to get active rather than watching baseball, check out the Cape Codgers Senior League. The league is welcoming to all skill levels, and players are generally 54 or older.
The league runs from June through September, with most games beginning around 5:30. If you aren’t comfortable playing, the league is always looking for umpires or scorekeepers. It’s a great way to socialize and meet new people while getting in a little physical activity.
