Nothing says its fall more than the smell of apple cider donuts and pumpkin spices. Cape Cod proves it is no longer just a summer vacation destination with its array of fall activities for kids. Weekends are abounded with a wide variety of wonderful outdoor activities for family members of all ages. And, of course, for those who just want to be outdoors, the weather is perfect for hiking and exploring the less crowded shorelines.
Apple Picking and Pumpkin Patches
Many of the local farms offer pick-your-own apples and pumpkins. Crowe Farm, a 50-acre family-run farm in historic Sandwich offers seasonal picking for apples, gourds and pumpkins, as well as a corn maze for $5 per person. Times vary so check their Facebook page before you head out.
Other local farms, including Coonamessett and Tony Andrews in Falmouth offer pumpkin picking as well. Slightly off Cape one can also visit Silverbrook Farm in Acushet for a variety of upick options.
Corn Mazes and Hayrides
Are you ready to navigate an aMazing journey? Corn Mazes are challenging and fun for those with a sense of adventure. After apple picking be sure to check out the Corn Mazes at both Crowe and Andrews Farms.
Fall Hayrides are one of the most popular fall activities for kids. In addition to Tony Andrews Farm(weekends only), the Cob Webb Farm in West Barnstable offers day and evening “light wagon rides”.
Animals are Fun Any Time of Year
A visit to see animals is at a local farm is a wonderful opportunity for children and animal lovers alike to learn about natures furry friends. Many local farms or museums offer animal programs that are always both fun and educational for children.
The Taylor Bray Farm in Yarmouthport and the Coonamesset Farm in Falmouth offer animal visits and wonderful educational programs for children. If you venture to Martha’s Vineyard, the FARM Institute is a working farm in Edgartown run by the Trustees of Reservations offering tours and family activities throughout their historic 162 acres.
And don’t forget about the marine animals! The aquarium at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History or the Woods Hole Aquarium are always a fascinating visit for the whole family. Join the Halloween Spooktacular Stroll on October 26th.
Halloween and Haunted Happenings
Chatham has been ranked as America’s 4th Best Town to visit in October. One popular attraction is the Pumpkin People in Katie Gould Park, from October 12th-31st . Or join in the fun at their Oktoberfest from 10:30am to 4:30pm on Saturday October 19th. With facepainting, games, food vendors and a beer garden. There will be lots of activities for kids.
Throughout the summer and especially notable each fall are the Barnstable Village Haunted and History Tours. A fun way for kids to explore history and children under 8 are free.
The Academy Playhouse in Orleans hosts a haunted house on weekends from mid-late October. There is an early version for younger children from 5-6:30pm and a scarier version beginning at 7pm. Reservations are required for all tours.
If you are still in search of ghouls, be sure to make a stop at the Crosby Family Mansion Halloween Spooktacular Show hosted by Friends of the Crosby Mansion in Brewster. There are four shows on the last weekends of October. Built in 1888 this historic home has many hidden stories buried between the walls.
Other Fall Activities for Kids
Cape Cod is abundant with history and family events. We all know this is where the Thanksgiving traditions began.
The Plymouth Patuxet Museum brings history to life so be sure to explore the offerings in Plymouth. On October 30th you can experience the Mayflower’s voyage through virtual reality on its 400th year anniversary.
The Heritage Museum stays open until October 20th this fall for children to explore their Hidden Hollow or enjoy the 1908 Looff Carousel. Remember that reservations open in late September for the Holiday Light Show which sells out quickly, so be sure to order now.
Another fun event is Cranberry Day on October 12th at the Thorton Burgess Society. There will be jam cooking demonstrations, storytime and cranberry treats.
Fall is always a great time to get the kids outdoors and enjoy the many hiking and biking trails on Cape Cod and the Islands. Check out the Adventure Parks, some stay open into the fall with great deals!
